Venue: All local villages and Corfu Town

A tradition that dates back to 1550, the Epitafio is a cloth depicting the body of Christ which is used by the Greek and Eastern Orthodox Churches, which is normally carried and paraded around the church and court yard, also including the village squares. In previous years this Kouvouklion was carried around every corner of the village.

All the parishioners hold lit candles and Hymns of lamentation are sung and flower petals noramlly from roses are thrown on the Epitafio. symbolising the annoiting of the body of Jesus Christ.

Once back at the church the parishioners walk underneath the Kouvouklion for blessings.

The dressing of the Kouvouklion is tradtionally done by unmarried girls of the village community. Many villagers will pick flowers to donate to the Epitafio dressing.

In Corfu Town a total of 33 Epitafio will parade the Venetain streets .The choirs of churches parade with hymns of lamentation as well as the Philarmonic orchestras with somber pieces of music, such as Adagio Mantzaros and Chopin's Marche Funebre.

With the Liston lights in deep purple ''manualia'' it is truly an unforgettable experience to be had. Spiritually magical!
